Police sergeant retiring after 32 years

For 32 years Terry Morrow strapped on his gun and pinned on his badge as he served the residents of Tyler.

On Friday, Morrow, a sergeant who served in a litany of capacities in the department, hung up that gun and badge as he retired.

Morrow began working for the department on June 1, 1980 and became a sergeant on May 11, 1988.

During his tenure he supervised patrol, oversaw internal investigations, served as the department’s public information officer, was a hostage and crisis negotiator and an instructor of new recruits at Tyler Junior College.

Morrow’s last position has him supervising the police substation and the Property Crimes Investigation Unit.

Morrow holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from William Patterson University of New Jersey, a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from The University of Texas at Tyler, a Master Peace Officer Certificate and a TCLEOSE Instructor’s Certificate. He is a graduate of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Command College of Texas.

He is a member of the East Texas Critical Incident Stress Management Team and was part of a local team that responded to the World Trade Center Ground Zero site as peer counselors in the aftermath of the 9/11 attack.

He is a recipient of the 1999 East Texas Crisis Center Hope Award, is a long time member of the center’s board of directors and is the current president of the board.

He was a United Way loaned executive from 1999 through 2008; received the Loaned Executive of the Year award in 2001; served as chairman of the loaned executives for 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; was a member of the board of directors for many years and has been an advisory board member of 2-1-1 of East Texas.

Morrow also is a past board member of the Tyler-Smith County FEMA-EFSP and a past member of the board of the Literacy Council of Tyler.

He is a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner and is an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville.
