Stuart Bird was named lone finalist for the Troup ISD superintendent position Friday during a special board meeting.

Trustees named Bird to the interim position in August after former Superintendent Dr. Marvin Beaty was hired in Bonham ISD.

They must now wait 21 days before officially hiring him as superintendent. They plan to meet again on Dec. 21 with the intent to hire Bird at that time.

In the meantime, Bird said he’s excited about the possibility.

“This is kind of home to us (he and his wife). We’ve been in the community a long time and know most everybody. I feel good about it … it’s a good school and good people,” he said.

If hired, he said he looks forward to developing a new set of goals, working on areas that might need improvement and continuing the academic quality that is already there.

Bird graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La. He taught in Sabine Parish for 10 years and then moved to Carthage. Bird served in Carthage as the school district’s band/fine arts director for 10 years and as principal at Carthage High School for 10 years.

His time in Jacksonville began in 2000 as principal of Jacksonville High School. He became superintendent of Jacksonville ISD in 2003 and announced his retirement in 2008.

Board member Bill Lacy described Bird as having “a very easygoing manner about him,” and said the board and staff think he’ll be a good fit for Troup.
