Linda Dyer, the new manager and hostess at the Holt House in Tyler, has the house decorated for the holidays with a different Christmas tree in almost every room.

“There's something magical about this place that draws people in,” she said. “I felt it when I came here.”

The Holt House, at 709 S. Bois d'Arc Ave., is a nonprofit resource center in Tyler that provides a place for senior citizens to enjoy meals, games and friends.

The annual Christmas Tea at the Holt House will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and is open to the public.

According to the news release from the Holt House, Mrs. Dyer has experience in management, personnel supervision, policy and program development and event planning. She also has years of experience working with seniors.

“One of Mrs. Dyer's many skills is decorating, and she's has turned the house into an extravaganza worth stopping by to visit,” Jean Hartin, board of directors chairperson, said in the release.

The Holt House is named after the family that built the home. It is disputed when the house was built, but historians believe it was sometime between 1895 and 1910. It's been used as the resource center since 1985.

Many of the funds to run the nonprofit come from the seniors who use the services, Mrs. Dyer said.

“They love this place,” she said. “It's been here for 27 years, and many of them have been coming for that long.”

Oftentimes, the lunch the seniors have at the house is the only meal they'll have that day, Mrs. Dyer said.

“Holt House is fortunate that Mrs. Dyer brings additional strength as she involves the abilities of her husband, Jack,” board member JoAnne Williams said in the written release. “Holt House is very pleased to welcome the Dyer family.”
