Students elect senate members at UT Health Science Center

Students at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler have elected representatives to their first Student Senate.
This is the official student government association for graduate students at the health science center and represents a milestone because its members are among the first group of students who will receive a degree from the school.
Students in the Master of Science in biotechnology program at the health science center elected the Student Senate representatives.
The biotechnology program began 16 years ago as a collaboration between the health science center and Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, according to the news release.
Although students attended classes and did their research at the health science center in Tyler, they received their degrees from SFA because that is the school they applied to for the program.
However, the biotechnology students enrolled this semester will be the first to graduate with a degree from the health science center rather than SFA, according to the news release.

Kalyn Fletcher, Student Senate president, said the organization “promotes an active student government; fosters educational, professional, and personal development; and establishes and maintains relationships with administrators and faculty,” according to the news release.
The Student Senate has several functions, according to the news release.
It enables students' concerns to be addressed; encourages interaction between students, faculty and staff; sponsors university-wide events; represents the university on various committees of the UT System; and serves the Tyler area through volunteer and community service, Ms. Fletcher said, according to the news release.
Besides Ms. Fletcher, other officers are: Zachary Hillberry, vice president; Sam McKenzie, secretary/treasurer; and Monica Jackson, historian/librarian.
Ms. Fletcher and Hillberry also serve as representatives to the UT System Student Advisory Council; McKenzie is an alternate to the council.
