Pineapple Sage a nice addition

Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) truly is a lovely addition to any sunny garden. The Golden Pineapple Sage is even more beautiful.
With its bright golden foliage all summer and into winter, a knockout in itself, add bright red flowers and “knockout” is an understatement. As if that weren’t enough, the heavenly pineapple aroma entices you to have a taste and tasting is what you should do.
Pineapple Sage is a very edible herb. Steep a handful of leaves in a pitcher of tea or lemonade, and enjoy the fruity addition. I love to add the bright red flowers to a tall glass of clear beverage, water, lemonade, or ginger ale. They really perk up a fruit salad too.
We have this lovely plant growing in the IDEA Garden right inside the south gate in the herb garden.
Last year that plant kept all its leaves and bloomed all winter nonstop! Now it has never done that before, mind you, and usually it’s “toast” after first frost.

It is blooming beautifully right now; so go check it out. Wait until spring to purchase one for yourself, as it needs a long growing season to become well-established.
Blue Moon always carries this golden one. Just situate it in a sunny well-drained area. Fertilize lightly with organic fertilizer. I had the green variety to get five by five feet in Dallas, but ours is about 4 years old and has only gotten to about 3x3 feet — very mannerly.
Hummingbirds, and butterflies love it and so do we.
