$20K worth of innovative projects set for Tyler classrooms

The Tyler ISD Foundation gave many teachers and students several reasons to be thankful this season.
On Friday, the foundation awarded more than $20,000 worth of grants to educators at seven TISD schools, in addition to a districtwide grant.
The grants will fund innovative projects at the campuses and affect several hundred students at most of them.
“We provide payments for employee recognition events and other programs which should not be paid with public tax dollars,” foundation executive director Larry Goddard said, according to a news release. “It’s nice to have donors who strongly advocate our public school system and continually link the success of our Tyler ISD to the success of our community.”
Goddard along with Chris Jones, a member of the TISD Foundation board of directors, were among those who presented the grants at the campuses. Jones has been chairman of the foundation’s grants committee for five years, according to the foundation news release.
These latest awards bring the foundation’s grant totals to more than $134,000 for this year, according to the news release.
The latest grant recipients were:
Moore MST Magnet School, Cookbook Project: Together at the Table, $1,425, Angela Singer, Kathy Watson and Teresa Easterling.
Students will submit a recipe and personal narrative that demonstrates the significance of their recipe and how it reflects their culture.
Andy Woods Elementary, Digits with Digiwalkers, $1,482.50, Happi Byrne and Ashley Phelps.
Digiwalker Pedometers will be used by every first- through fifth-grader during their physical education class.
Hubbard Middle School, From Sun to Shining Sea, $4,247.35, DeAnna Molloy, STEM team.

Students in Hubbard’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes will design and build a solar-powered boat to learn about green energy and their engineering abilities.
James Hogg Middle School, Duct Tape Derby, $3,639.53, Shulanda Wade, Bobbie Schroeder, Sandra Weaver, Shawn Kisamore, Larry Boyd, Jennifer Whitehead and Leah Huffstutler.
Duct Tape Derby simulates the business world by requiring students to work collaboratively and creatively. The students must conceive a design and apply their knowledge of mathematical concepts to create and build a cardboard box car capable of winning a race.
Dr. Bryan C. Jack Elementary, The Leader in Me: Being the Light of the Community, $4,000, Kimberly Hill and Judy Garvin.
Further training and updated materials will be provided so that Jack Elementary can become the leader for training other campuses with Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.”
Rice Elementary, The Wiggle Room, $600, Diana Koop.
The Wiggle Room is a lab that is structured to provide sensory and/or motor breaks for students who need a sensory/motor outlet outside of scheduled physical education and recess. This will help them focus and stay on task in the classroom.
Caldwell Elementary, “The Little Mermaid,” $2,500, Derek Johnson, Johnnie Patton, Katy Lee and Nikki Aubuchon.
The funding is granted to produce the Broadway Junior Musical, “The Little Mermaid.”
Districtwide Grant, 5-2-1-0 program, $2,500, The Northeast Texas Public Health District, city of Tyler, Fit City and Tyler ISD.
This program emphasizes a daily five servings of fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of recreational screen time; at least one hour of physical activity; and zero sugary drinks.
