Ex-Harlem Globetrotter coming to TJC on Monday

Former Harlem Globetrotter Melvin Adams is set to speak at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Wise Auditorium on the Tyler Junior College main campus.
Former Harlem Globetrotter Melvin Adams is set to speak at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Wise Auditorium on the Tyler Junior College main campus.
The free event is open to the public.
Adams will discuss some of his life experiences and the obstacles he overcame that led to him being the success he is today, according to a TJC news release.
He will emphasize the importance of making good grades and completing college.
His presentation will have a fast-paced, musical and motivational message, a written release indicated.
Adams’ passion for reaching America’s youth has provided countless opportunities to speak, perform and share with groups.
Born in 1971 and raised in the Houston ghetto, Adams overcame negative life circumstances to achieve his dream of playing professional basketball, according to the news release.
His father died when he was 13, and with the pressure of being financially strapped and surrounded by hopeless situations, he turned to sports.
He attributes hard work and endless practice to keeping him out of trouble.

Adams graduated from San Jose Christian College where he was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American basketball player.
After college, he continued to focus on basketball and was given the opportunity to play basketball professionally.
He later joined the Harlem Globetrotters and has been named Mr. Globetrotter numerous times.
This award is presented annually to the teammate that most exemplifies the excitement and energy associated with the Harlem Globetrotters.
In March 2000, he retired from the Harlem Globetrotters to focus on reaching youth nationwide.
After college, he continued to focus on basketball and was given the opportunity to play basketball professionally.
He later joined the Harlem Globetrotters and has been named Mr. Globetrotter numerous times.
