Board members gave high praise to interim superintendent Gary Mooring, who has been serving since August, when former Superintendent Dr. Randy Reid left for Keller ISD.
School district attorney John Hardy said Thursday board members evaluated Mooring's performance in closed session and that it was apparent from that evaluation they were pleased with his leadership.
However, Hardy said, if the board wants to hire Mooring for the permanent position or anyone else for the matter, they must first post the job opening, which the district will do today.
The district has opted not to hire a search firm — something it has done the past two times it needed to hire a superintendent, in 2007 and 2002.
Board vice president the Rev. Orenthia Mason said given the timing of the search and the fact most superintendents are locked into contracts at this time, the district feels this is the best way to go.
The opening will be posted for the required 10 days on the school district website, at the district administration building and at each of the district's facilities, Hardy said.
After considering all submitted resumes, the board will name a lone finalist. After naming a lone finalist, the board must wait 21 days before hiring the person.
Hardy emphasized that although the board is extremely pleased with Mooring and his leadership, they have not selected a superintendent at this time and all submitted résumés will be considered.
Board members praised Mooring's leadership and stability. Trustee Brad Spradlin said he is pleased with the work Mooring has done.
“(All) he brings to the table is an awful lot and he will be seriously considered for (this) position,” Spradlin said.
Trustee Shirley Jordan said she is excited that the board can start this process so they can hire a superintendent as soon as possible.
Trustee Eleno Licea said the fact Mooring is a part of the East Texas community and someone who wants to be here for the long-term pleases him.
Board member Therelee Washington said he has talked to many teachers about what they think of Mooring and they are pleased.
“I think that he's going to do a wonderful job if he is going to be superintendent of our schools,” he said.
Board member Andy Bergfeld said it is an interesting time in TISD with a lot going on.
“Mr. Mooring has come in and provided stability, maturity and sincerity,” Bergfeld said, adding that these qualities mean more than some of the “fancy attributes” they see when they go through superintendent search processes.
The Rev. Mason said she appreciates Mooring's vision. After the meeting, she said he has great experience networking with the higher education institutions in the area, works wells with people and can quickly and ably assess what needs to be done in given situations.
Mooring said the board's praise means everything to him, and it's humbling to be considered for the permanent position.
Although he had not originally intended to apply for it, he said he's grown to appreciate the camaraderie of working with the staff and is interested in confronting the challenges in TISD and education as a whole.
He said Tyler is where he plans to spend the rest of his life and a place that several of his family members live.
“If I can, at this stage in my career, make a contribution to help Tyler ISD move forward it would be a real honor,” he said.
Mooring previously served as TISD's interim superintendent in 2007 and as its deputy superintendent for five months in 2006. He also held several other interim positions and served as a consultant in the district.
Before coming to Tyler, he was superintendent of Bishop Consolidated ISD and Hutto ISD. He has more than 30 years of education experience.
