ETexas Boy Scouts collecting food for needy Saturday

Boys Scouts across 17 counties will collect bags of food for needy East Texas families on Saturday.
Thousands of Boy Scouts distributed empty bags to households across the region on Nov. 10, and scouts will return Saturday to pick up the full bags. The contents will go to help provide holiday meals for local families.
“We encourage those residents who had a collection bag placed at their door last weekend to put non-perishable food items in it and place it on their porch before 8 a.m. this Saturday,” said Sam Anderson, vice president of marketing for the East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. “The same boys who placed the bag there last week will then pick it up and deliver it to the appropriate food pantry.”
The need for food is great in our area. According to the East Texas Food Bank, 428,000 East Texans are at risk of hunger. The scouts help supply some of the food that local food banks deliver to families in need in our own communities.

“Just imagine the anguish of a parent who cannot provide food for his or her family, especially during the holidays,” Anderson said. “Unfortunately many families are having difficulty making ends meet, and this will be a great help to them.”
Residents who did not receive a bag, but would still like to participate in the Scouting for Food event can contact the East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, at 903-240-2144 for the location of a collection point near them.
The East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves more than 14,000 young boys and girls with the help of more than 3,000 trained volunteers in the following counties: Anderson, Angelina, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Houston, Marion, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rusk, San Augustine, Shelby, Smith, Sabine, Trinity, Upshur and Wood.
