Colorful viola x pansy cascades with abandon

Let me introduce you to our newest arrival. This little viola x pansy spreads or cascades. Plant it in a basket or pot and it will tumble over the side with abandon.
It comes in several colors, but the variegated ones are very fetching to me. Look at this cute little face and see if you can keep from falling in love. We had a spreading pansy last year in the IDEA Garden and we loved it. You can plant these little guys 12 to 18 inches apart to cover a bed.
The plants cost a bit more but cover more space making them about the same in the long run.
I have seen the cascading pansies in several garden centers and a couple of nurseries. I haven’t been in many places lately to look for them; so they may be everywhere. I am sure this plant will be a hit and we will see more colors in the future.
There are so many plants that bloom in winter, so look for others in this column over the next few weeks. We have some beauties that will bloom from now until late spring.
