Republicans’ post-election analysis effort falls short, November 14
The election post-mortems have been interesting. On Saturday, the usually mild and gracious Cal Thomas was in full apocalyptic dudgeon. He finds his country to be “self-indulgent, greedy and envious,” and “no longer the America of our Founders,” bemoaning our loss of faith and creeping European socialism. First, the vices Thomas enumerates are to be found across the political spectrum, both left and right. Next, real history (not the air-brushed variety) records that we were no longer that country by 1812, much less 2012. American religiosity is often over-hyped, a faith “3,000 miles wide and 3 inches deep.” Evidence of spiritual malaise can be better seen in our mad consumerism (think South Broadway the day after Thanksgiving), than in the polling place. Finally, the scare tactic of “European socialism” is less convincing these days, particularly in light of our own mix of accepted socialism in place since the 1930s.
On Sunday, the smart-as-a-whip Charles Krauthammer advised Republicans to stay the course and make no substantive changes, other than tweaking immigration policy and nominating Marco Rubio in 2016. No doubt many Democrats hope the GOP takes his advice. By so doing, they would not have to worry about a serious Republican challenger until at least 2020.
On Monday, the ever-bitter Mona Charen mourned Romney’s loss since he “deserved” to win. She ascribed the victory to the “ugly” campaign waged by President Obama. Ms. Charen was apparently away from the television during all the Romney commercials.
