Chapel Hill ISD grants money for technology
Chapel Hill ISD students will have more technology at their disposal soon.
The district is using about $72,000 from its state instructional materials allotment for technology-related teacher grants.
More than 20 grants involving 46 teachers will be awarded for technology such as iPads, android devices, laptops and digital cameras.
“It is all about technology focus (and) 21st century learning. This was a way for us to get digital technology into the hands of students,” Assistant Superintendent Lisa McCreary said.
Checks were presented Friday on various campuses. The checks are a symbolic representation for teachers who are grant recipients, Ms. McCreary said.
According to district documents, nearly 40 grant applications were submitted, representing $120,377 in requests.
Up to $2,500 could be awarded for individual teacher projects, and up to $5,000 could be awarded for campus teams, departments or grade-level projects, according to the documents.
Ms. McCreary said the technology items will be predominantly for student use on campus, and the whole idea is to expand the technology available to students at every grade level.

“It’s going to impact lots of different programs, (including music) …” she said. “We’re trying to go meet (students) where they’re at. I just commend the teachers for taking the time to write a grant to enhance the learning for their students. We’re excited about the amount of technology we’ll be putting in their hands.”
Suzanne Ybarra, a reading interventionist at Wise Elementary School, said she is “on cloud nine” and “thrilled beyond means” about the grant funds.
She said she has students with characteristics of dyslexia and has wanted to integrate technology into daily activities.
“I really wanted them to have something in their hands,” Ms. Ybarra said. “I can’t wait to put all my ideas into actions and to see the students with more motivation and excitement.”
She will receive four iPads with cases and headphones as part of the grant.
Ms. McCreary said the new equipment likely will be ordered next week.
