Still time to weigh-in for challenge
Staff Reports

An estimated 2,000 people attended last weekend’s Lighten Up East Texas weigh-in event at Bergfeld Park as The Fit City Challenge coalition kicked off the regional weight-loss challenge. Nearly 1,000 weighed-in there and others did so at others locations across the region on Friday.

Another chance to weigh in will be held on Friday.

See www.lightenupeasttexas.com/weigh-in-locations for times and locations.

Health Editor Coshandra Dillard will highlight stories of those who are taking the challenge. She is tracking the progress of Rhonda Glena and team Wii Get Fit.

If you’d like to share your story of weight-loss struggles and/or triumphs, contact Coshandra Dillard at 903-596-6283 or email cdillard@tylerpaper.com.

TEAM WII GET FIT
Members of this team have taken the challenge to shed weight and have been successful with healthy living initiatives at their job, Horizon Inc.

Team members, most who are visually impaired, are motivated to not only get to a healthy weight but also by the opportunity to win a new car and other prizes that will be given away at the final weigh-in in May.

Team Members: Pat Spenla, Lisa Hamlett, Donna Milliken, Pam Crawford, Linda Moore, Sheila DePriest, Jan Lynch, Craig Ellis, Terri Zifchock, Tim Dawson, Seth Wilson and Paquita Felix.
Goal: Lose a collective 400 pounds.

Method: team support through encouragement, swapping recipe ideas, exercising together.

RHONDA GLENA
Rhonda Glena, 51, of Athens, is hoping that Lighten Up East Texas is the challenge that will get her on the road to a healthy weight. She said her body mass index, a height-weight calculation, is 51. An individual is obese when the BMI is greater than 30.

Goal: Lose 120 pounds and reduce the amount of medications she takes.

Method: Since the event, Ms. Glena has formed a team, which includes her daughter, Renee. To join them, email LightenUpAthens@yahoo.com.

She will work out at a gym in Athens, find Weight Watchers recipes and look for encouragement from her family, friends and coworkers.
