Historic Tyler’s “Mod Squad” Modern Committee plans to host its second open house Thursday, featuring a 1957 home built by Bruce-Russell Associates.

The gathering is planned for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the home of Diane and Rick Stewart, 230 Glenhaven off Old Bullard Road in the Azalea District.

“Due to the success of the first open house, we have high hopes that this next member- only event will be even better,” committee chair Brandy Jones said in a statement.

The event is free and available to Historic Tyler Inc. members only, but new memberships to the organization may be purchased at the door starting at $40 for individuals.

The featured mid-century home has the characteristic low pitch roof, deep roof overhangs and outdoor courtyards.

The Stewarts have modernized the home, opening the kitchen up to the living room yet still maintaining the original floor plan of the home.

Committee members said this home is a great example of melding the old and new, still upholding the design of the mid-century era.

Members of the Mod Squad committee will be docents, for the evening, to educate and inform visitors about the architecture and history of the home.

In August, the organization hosted a tour of a home at 526 E. Lake St., the former residence of late architect E. Davis Wilcox, owned today by Ray and Wendy Gallagher.

Executive Director Cassie Edmonds called the last tour “wildly successfully,” generating 28 new memberships in a single evening; the organization typically receives about 32 new members annually.

“We’re hoping for a good turnout,” Ms. Edmonds said.

Historic Tyler, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1977, is dedicated to the promotion, preservation and protection of historic structures through education, involvement and public-private investments.
