Hope Hustle 5K, Fun Run today at Health Science Center
The first Hope Hustle 5K and Fun Run kicks off today on the wooded campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun, president of the health science center, is expected to open the race, which begins at 8 a.m., followed at 8:30 a.m. by the one mile walk or run. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

Both events follow a winding course through the forest of pines that cover most of the health science center’s 600-acre property at the corner of U.S. 271 and Texas Highway 155.

“We’re hosting the Hope Hustle to highlight wellness activities for our employees and the community, and to raise awareness of the importance of healthy living,” David Conley, the health science center’s wellness and training coordinator, said in a prepared statement. “We also want the community to visit our campus and see all that we have to offer, including nationally known specialists in lung disease and cancer and a new Cancer Treatment and Prevention Center.”

Children under the age of 10 are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

The run was organized by a committee of health science center employees.

The event is intended to support the mission of Tyler’s Fit City Challenge and the regional Lighten Up East Texas wellness initiatives, which focus on developing and maintaining fit and healthy lifestyles.
