Former sheriff's employee pleads guilty to misuse of information

A former employee of Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Terry Jean Raybin pleaded guilty Friday to the charge of misuse of official information to obtain reward money from the Anderson County Crime Stoppers board, District Attorney Doug Lowe said.

Visiting retired District Judge Jerry L. Calhoun accepted the plea in advance of a jury trial that was scheduled to begin Tuesday.
Ms. Raybin, 51, of Palestine, will be sentenced by District Judge Deborah Oakes Evans during a hearing scheduled Jan. 25.
According to information from the district attorney, investigators in the case alleged that while working as a secretary for the sheriff’s office Ms. Raybin used confidential information to obtain $400 cash reward money for herself that the Crime Stoppers board had authorized for payment of an anonymous tip.
The charge is a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
Since Ms. Raybin has no prior criminal history, she is eligible for probation, according to information from the district attorney.
The Anderson County Adult Community and Corrections Department will prepare a presentence investigation report for the judge to consider in deciding the sentence for Ms. Raybin, Lowe said.
