Baby rescued in roadway; caregiver found unconscious
The actions of a motorist Tuesday morning led to the rescue of a baby in a major roadway and the discovery of the child's grandmother unconscious in her home.
Smith County Sheriff's Lt. Larry Wiginton said the incident happened in the 11000 block of Farm-to-Market Road 14.
Wiginton said two cars had to swerve off the roadway to avoid the child, who had left the home through an open door and then made its way through an opening in the fence surrounding the home.
“The two men were driving down the road, one from the north and the other from the south, and saw the baby in the middle of the road and they stopped and called us,” he said.
One got the baby and kept it safe.
Wiginton said as deputies arrived on scene, neighbors led them to a house where the child's grandmother lives.
Wiginton said the child's mother left the child with the grandmother while she went to an appointment.

As deputies entered the home, they found the grandmother unconscious on the floor.
“We are still trying to figure out how the baby got out of the house, but apparently the grandmother has some type of seizure disorder,” he said.
A woman at the residence said she did not have anything to say about the incident other than, “If we could thank the person that saved the child, we would like to do that.”
Wiginton said if not for the motorists' seeing the child, the incident would have more than likely turned deadly.
The area of FM 14 is in the vicinity of several trucking companies, and traffic is relatively heavy with 18-wheelers and passenger car traffic.
“We are just glad they both saw the child in time,” he said.
