Baby rescued from middle of the road on Farm-to-Market Road 14

UPDATED Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 10:49 a.m. CDT
UPDATE: The baby, about one year old, was in the middle of Farm-to-Market Road 14 when two vehicles approached -- one from the south and one from the north, sheriff's officials said. Both vehicles had to swerve to miss hitting the baby, officials said. The speed limit along that stretch of road is 60 mph.

The actions of two men this morning led to the rescue of a baby in a major roadway and the discovery of the child's grandmother unconscious in her home.

Smith County Sheriff's Lt. Larry Wiginton said the incident is ongoing on Farm-to-Market Road 14.

“The two men were driving down the road and saw the baby in the middle of the road and they stopped and called us. They then got the baby and kept it safe until we got there,” he said.

Wiginton said as deputies arrived on scene, neighbors were able to lead them to a house where the child's grandmother lives.

Wiginton said the child's mother had gone to work and left the child with the grandmother.

As deputies entered the home they found the grandmother unconscious on the floor.

“We are still trying to figure out how the baby got out of the house, but apparently the grandmother has some type of seizure disorder,” he said.

Tyler Paper will bring additional details on this story as they become available.
