The man accused of shooting his ex-wife to death last week and kidnapping their 4-year-old son made his initial appearance Monday in the Smith County 241st District Court.
Judge Jack Skeen Jr. set the bond of James Calvert at $25 million and told Calvert that because the defendant had signed a pauper's oath that an attorney would be appointed to represent him.
Calvert, 41, also was indicted on charges of capital murder on Monday, Skeen said in court. The defendant appeared late Monday evening with several deputies accompanying him to the courtroom. He sat quietly, and responded to Skeen sayin,g “Yes sir,” and “No sir,” when the judged asked him questions. Frank Dobrovolny, of Jacksonville, acted as Calvert's stand-by attorney in court until one can be appointed for the defendant.
“There are no issues of mental competency before me,” Skeen told Calvert. However, Skeen said he thought the attorney that would be appointed to Calvert would want a mental competency examination performed.
Calvert arrived back in Tyler shortly after 2 p.m. from West Monroe, La., where he was captured last Wednesday night after a massive manhunt ensued after he allegedly shot and killed 30-year-old Jelena Radobanovic Sriraman and fled her Bain Place residence with their son Lucas.
He was captured when he made some erratic moves in front of a West Monroe police officer who initiated a traffic stop.
Don Martin, Tyler police spokesman, said Calvert led police on a short pursuit until his vehicle was involved in a one-car accident on a dead end street.
On Monday, Tyler police officers arrived at the Smith County Jail with Calvert, who was wearing only socks on his feet, an orange West Monroe Jail jumpsuit and handcuffs and leg restraints.
Jailers quickly booked the man back into jail and led him through the underground tunnel to Skeen's court.
