A salute to New Orleans
BY REBECCA HOEFFNER

Junior League of Tyler’s Mistletoe & Magic will channel the spirit of New Orleans this year.

“The food, decorations and vibe will be a salute to one of the best cities in the world,” said Ginger Haberle, chairwoman of the holiday market set for Thursday through Saturday at Harvey Convention Center.

The decorations transforming the exhibit halls into iconic New Orleans streetscapes decked out for the holiday season include simple wrought iron and antique-looking pieces.

“There will be lamp posts, bistro tables and a centerpiece horse-and-carriage like the ones used in the French Quarter, all with a little bit of Christmas garland,” Mrs. Haberle said.

The market — which this year is being called Mistleteaux & Magic — will feature more than 90 vendors and specialty boutiques. Among the items awaiting shoppers are gourmet foods and candies, antiques, gifts, holiday decorations for the home and garden, clothing, housewares, accessories and jewelry.

Mrs. Haberle said that new features include a bag check on Thursday and Friday “so people can shop longer and lighter,” and that recyclable bags will be given to all shoppers.

The exhibit halls also will display art by local artists, a practice inspired by the art displays in Jackson Square in the heart of New Orleans.

The market annually attracts about 12,000 shoppers. It is the largest fundraiser for Junior League of Tyler, the community-service organization of women. Last year’s event raised more than $300,000, which the Junior League used to fund special projects such as its Girl Power Summit and Reading Camp and to help nonprofit organizations.

Shopping hours are noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission to the market is $8 each day.

Back by popular demand at the party will be The Pictures, a dance band that does a little bit of every kind of music, Mrs. Haberle said.

Savoie’s Catering of Shreveport will provide New Orleans-inspired and traditional Texas foods. The Preview Party participants will also be the first to shop.
