Important Elections, November 2
As I ponder the new responsibilities I will officially assume when I am ordained the fourth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tyler, I am humbled and profoundly grateful that I can continue the work of bishops before me.
As Catholics, we count ourselves with and among the great majority of East Texans who are people of faith, rooted in the Word of God and the truth our loving God has revealed to us.
Our Catholic doctrine, as well as Christian doctrine everywhere, is based on Judeo-Christian principles. These core fundamentals teach us that all the baptized are joined to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, and we are called by our baptism to live as one body in the Lord.
The upcoming national elections have great and significant implications for all peoples of faith. We believe that everything that exists flows from the creative will of our loving God. We believe that God has created the human person in His image and the life of every person is sacred, and further, we believe that God has created us with free will and the ability to choose to follow His truth.
The fundamental truths that once were and still should be the bedrock of our society are being challenged daily. I believe the election on Nov. 6 brings a great task to all of us as people of faith to soberly reflect on what we believe and how those beliefs should be embodied in our laws and supported by our leaders.
Let us all reflect together, pray together and be guided by the wisdom of God to choose local, state and national leaders who, too, are people of faith.
