Lighten Up East Texas kicks off Saturday with prizes, inspiration
There's still time to register a team, and plenty of time to participate in the region's first weight-loss program.
Weigh-ins for Lighten Up East Texas will kickoff at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bergfeld Park.
In addition to the weigh-ins, participants can browse the 35 booths, which will have health information and demonstrations. Light snacks, samples and water will be available.
Added to the list of prizes at the final weigh-in in May is a Travel Masters Flexible Passport Dream Vacation Dream Vacation, sponsored by Sharon Howell at Travel Masters, worth $5,000.
The winner of the prize may travel anywhere in the world by themselves or with multiple people. The grand prize given away at the May final weigh-in is a 2013 Dodge Dart, provided by Allen Samuels Dodge.
Participants are encouraged to lose at least 5 percent of their body weight. Their name will be entered into a drawing for every 5 percent of body weight loss, up to 20 percent, for a maximum of four entries.
Participants also will have chances to win fitness packages, other trips and hotel stays and Brookshire's gift cards.
Fit City Coalition members will give away $1,000 worth of Brookshire's gift cards Saturday and another $4,000 worth of Brookshire's gift cards in May.
During the weigh-in, participants will receive a T-shirt, provided by Lighthouse Graphics.
On stage at the amphitheater about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 10 people will be recognized with Fit City inspirational awards. Community members nominated these recipients for already embracing a healthy lifestyle.
Fit City coalition members are developing a committee of health care professionals to guide participants who need advice or help losing weight.
Brookshire's, Allen Samuels Dodge, Lighthouse Graphics, Northeast Texas Health Public Health District, the city of Tyler and the Tyler Morning Telegraph are platinum-level sponsors for the Lighten Up East Texas event.
