Tyler ISD suspends annual fundraising golf tournament
From Staff Reports
The Tyler ISD Foundation has suspended its annual Gil Hitt Memorial Golf Tournament this year because of rising costs and low fundraising results.
The Tyler ISD Foundation has suspended its annual Gil Hitt Memorial Golf Tournament this year because of rising costs and low fundraising results.
The tournament planned for Monday will not be held, according to a foundation news release. Decisions about future golf tournaments will be made later.
The foundation plans to create a permanent endowment named the Gil Hitt Memorial Leadership Fund, with the annual interest going toward a classroom teacher grant.
Hitt was a former school board president and local business leader who died in 1997.
The golf tournament, which has been held for almost 20 years, was named after him in 1998.
Last year’s tournament netted about $1,700, according to the news release.
“Given the rising costs of staff and volunteer time and fees for country clubs, this is the best decision,” Larry Goddard, foundation executive director, said, according to the news release. “We are not canceling the tourney idea but as one director said, ‘Let’s let it rest and if we see good reason to bring it back, it will be stronger than ever.’”
A 5K/10K run is being planned for February and possibly a formal gala in the spring.
The TISD Foundation exists to raise funds and grant those funds to TISD teachers, campuses or the district for programs.
