Dr. Stein jailed in East Texas for pipeline protest

Green party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein was arrested Wednesday morning in Wood County for criminal trespassing, a jailer at the Wood County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
Green party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein was arrested Wednesday morning in Wood County for criminal trespassing, a jailer at the Wood County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
The arrest occurred about 10 a.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 2088. Dr. Stein remained in the Wood County Jail Wednesday afternoon on a $1,500 bond. Criminal trespassing is a class B misdemeanor.
Dr. Stein, a 62-year-old physician, was arrested after bringing food and supplies to the “Tar Sands Blockade,” a coalition of climate justice activists who are attempting to stop the Keystone XL pipeline in Texas, according to her campaign website. The 435-mile Gulf Coast Project would run through eastern Wood and Smith counties, northeast and southeast corners of Cherokee County and western Nacogdoches County.
The pipeline would lie just east of Winnsboro, Hawkins, Winona, New Chapel Hill, Arp, New Summerfield, Reklaw and Wells.
“Everyone needs to step up resistance to climate-killing emissions,” Dr. Stein said on her website. Republican presidential candidate Mitt “Romney and (President Barack) Obama are only talking about the symptoms of climate change in terms of destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy; the blockaders are addressing the cause.”

Speaking at ongoing protests in Texas, she added, “Climate change means more frequent severe storms that lead to massive flooding and destruction. We will see more destructive storms than Sandy in the years to come. We have to stop spending our tax dollars to build homes in low-lying coastal areas and flood plains. The billions spent rebuilding the (New York City) subway system must reflect that sea levels will continue to rise.”
Dr. Stein's website states she was joined by seven others Wednesday, including three blockaders and four members of the media.
