“It's like I personally picked them. They are everything I wanted them to be. It's pretty awesome,” said 14-year-old Kacy.
Her 10-year-old brother, Deris, adds, “I love 'em!”
These siblings adjusted quickly to their new life and are grateful. “I just see that I am going to be able to stay here and not have to move from house to house and parent to parent.”
Kacy goes on to say, “I know that my parents will be at my wedding and at my graduation and that they're always there for me and if I ever need to talk to them about anything they are always there for me.”
But having two young children was the farthest thing from the minds of Jana and Larry. In their 50's, with three grown children, they had their sites on retirement, but their hearts were set on adoption.
“I couldn't stop thinking about it. So I started praying. 'If this is from You, put it on Larry's heart.'” Jana said. “I never said anything to Larry about it.”
After some time passed, she asked Larry if he'd been thinking about adoption. “I wish I had a picture of his face because his face just said it all. He looked at me and said, 'How in the world did you know that?'”
“That's as clear as it gets,” said Larry. “It came about because of God. The timing wasn't our timing it's the Lord's timing. That's what happened.”
Now they had to figure out how to answer the call. Jana said, “I remembered you had a program and so I Googled Gillian Sheridan and it came up with the [“Children are a Gift”] website.
They began watching videos of foster children featured in CBS 19.
“When you see the commitment of children wanting to stay together with their sibling that is monumental to me it really is,” explained Larry.
Several months later, Jana and Larry's world would change forever with a comment from a friend. “Jana did you see Children are a Gift last week? I saw your kids. I know they are your kids,” said their friend from bible study.
Kacy said, “I prayed every night, 'Either let me go back with my mom or find me the right family.' I prayed that every night over and over and over again and it just happened and it was like God answering my prayer and I was so excited and I just really love it here.”
These siblings now feel safe and loved.
Larry said, “I don't feel like I've helped them, they've helped me. They've blessed our home. Oh, I just love them.”
Adopting older children was never in question for Larry and Jana, “I just felt like there was so much more of a need at that level. It wasn't about us.”
Larry added, “If they'll just open up their hearts and open up their mind of acceptance they'll find out the treasures that older children, if you adopt them, can bring into your home.”
A family created out of prayer and growing in love.
“There's not a place in the world I'd rather be than here. It's really amazing and an answer from God,” said Kacy.
