Woman sentenced to 85 years for drug charges

A Smith County jury gave a Tyler woman 85 years in prison Thursday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone, Smith Co-unty Assistant District Attorney Jason Parrish said.

A Smith County jury gave a Tyler woman 85 years in prison Thursday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone, Smith Co-unty Assistant District Attorney Jason Parrish said.
Daphne Dakeisha Ausborne, 32, will have to serve at least 15 years for the first-degree felony before she is eligible for parole, Parrish said. Ms. Ausborne had one prior felony conviction in May 2010 for possession of a controlled substance for which she received a four-year sentence. She was on parole for that offense when she was arrested for her current offense, Parrish said.
The trial took place in Judge Jack Skeen Jr.’s courtroom in the 241st District Court. Ms. Ausborne could have received life in prison for the offense. Defense attorney Clifton Roberson represented the defendant.
On June 14, the Tyler Police Department raided a home at 1307 Queen St., Parrish said. After searching the home, which was within 1,000 feet of the Ebenezer’s Day Care Center, police recovered 14 grams of crack cocaine, scales and other items associated with drug dealing, Parrish said.

Ms. Ausborne was inside the residence. Police also obtained a search warrant for her purse, which contained $200 in proceeds from drug sales, Parrish said. It was not clear if Ms. Ausborne lived at the residence, he said.
Ms. Ausborne has a history of misdemeanor convictions going back to 2004, according to the Smith County judicial website.
