FRANKSTON — The cowboy folk down yonder at Frankston’s Atwood Hat Co. are teeming with excitement in anticipation of their trip to the County Music Awards in Nashville next week.
But it’s not just a trip to meet some of the biggest names in country music that is causing such a stir; it’s the fact Atwood Hats has been named the official cowboy hat of this year’s awards.
“I am thrilled and tickled to death. What an honor and a special thing for them to choose us,” Sharon Atwood said.
Mrs. Atwood’s husband, Dick, founded the company in the late 1980s after his many trips into Mexico resulted in friends and acquaintances wanting the palm leaf cowboy hats he was bringing back.
The 81-year-old Atwood said recently he started off hoping to sell about 300 hats a year, but last year the company topped 130,000 hats sold.
Casey Hagan, marketing director for Atwood, said she received an email from the CMA several weeks ago and she made a call to see what exactly the details of such an offer.

“I called them immediately to see if it would help us and how we would benefit them. They told us that they had never had an official cowboy hat before and they just really liked our product so we worked up a deal and now we are the official hat of the CMAs,” she said.
Ms. Hagan said she and Mrs. Atwood will present a special embroidered Atwood Hat to Steve Moore, president of CMA, commemorating the 46th annual awards show.
“We will have most of the stars take pictures in our hats, and we will be targeting some stars to see if they would be interested in endorsing our products,” she said.
Lindale’s Miranda Lambert is one of the nominees attending the show Thursday.
