U.S. Senate candidate Ted Cruz said Friday that liberty has never before been as imperiled as it has been under the current presidential administration.

The Tea Party-endorsed candidate told the members of the Grassroots America We the People organization, “With only 11 days to go until this election, we are on the two-yard line, and this is what we have been fighting for.”

Grassroots America, which endorsed Cruz in his run-off election against Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, hosted a special campaign appearance for the candidate at the Lakeview Church of the Nazarene in Tyler.

Cruz, who was Solicitor General of Texas from 2003 to May 2008, criticized President Barack Obama for the slow economic growth of 1.5 percent per year during his time in office and contrasted it with that of former President Ronald Reagan.

Reagan, who became president after he defeated President Jimmy Carter in 1980, implemented different policies and “limited the growth of spending, restrained regulation and there was an explosion of economic productivity” during Reagan's presidency, Cruz said. The economic growth when Reagan was president was 7.2 percent in 1984, Cruz said.

The candidate also criticized the growth of the national debt and said during his 4-year-old daughter Caroline's life, the debt had grown by 60 percent. “It's wrong to pass on to our children and grandchildren that crushing debt,” Cruz said to enthusiastic cheers from the more than 200 people seated in the church sanctuary.

Cruz also talked about his unlikely winning of the run-off election against Dewhurst and said he started out in the polls with 2 percent of the vote and won by 14 points.

“This is an incredible testament to what the men and women of Texas can do when they work together,” he said.

JoAnn Fleming, executive director of Grassroots America, introduced Cruz to the audience by asking them if they were “ready to get rid of some liberals” in the next election. When the group cheered, she brought Cruz, whom she called “a great patriot” up on stage.
