80-year-old woman in Rusk county was seriously injured in dog attack
Staff Reports

An 80-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her legs, torso and arms after authorities said she was attacked by several dogs Wednesday morning outside her Overton home, according to a Rusk County Sheriff’s Office statement.

The sheriff’s office received the call about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in reference to the attack in the 1000 block of County Road 1113 in Overton.

Authorities said the woman went outside to get the newspaper and was attacked by five dogs when returning to her house.

A witness was driving by and saw the incident.

“The witness stopped and was able to get the dogs away from the victim and called 911,” according to the statement.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and was listed in intensive care, according to the press release sent Thursday afternoon.

Rusk County investigators contacted the owner of the dogs, who authorities said has been very cooperative and assisted in capturing the dogs.

The witness to the attack confirmed the five dogs captured were the ones involved, authorities said.

The dogs were later euthanized and sent to Austin for testing.

“It is unclear to investigators as to what initiated the attack,” the statement reads. “Due to the victim’s condition, investigators were not able to speak to her to find out what happened.”

The city of Henderson Animal Control, Precinct 1 Constable Sammy Nichols and Overton Police Chief Clyde Carter assisted with the call.
