Tyler Children’s Park, 900 S. Broadway Ave., will hold its annual Day of Remembrance on Saturday to commemorate the lives of children who have died

I can’t think of many things in life that would be more agonizing for a parent than the lingering heartache from the death of your child. And I can’t imagine how meaningful Day of Remembrance must be for those who have experienced such profound loss.

Jennifer Carson knows how it feels. She has lost a child to death. And she knows how special Day of Remembrance is. She established it in part as way for her and others to cope with such loss and to remember their children.

Listen to her words.

The event “provides a safe place for families who have experienced the loss of a child to come together, to remember their children and to grieve the tremendous loss in their lives.

“There are few places in our society where we are given permission and even encouraged to feel and express the depth of our pain that results from the loss of a child. Our hope is that as people are given the space to grieve, they will be able to connect their feelings and move further along in their healing journey.”

She speaks from the heart.

Her young son, Braden Alex Carson, died in 1999. Following his death, Mr. and Mrs. Carson set out to create a lasting legacy to Braden and a place to celebrate the lives of all children.

Drawing from inspiration of Psalm 127:3 (“Children are a gift from the Lord.”) they established the nonprofit Children are a Gift Foundation.

The foundation acquired overgrown property on Broadway Avenue and transformed it into The Children’s Park. Perhaps best known for its oversized Teddy Bear statues, the park is maintained by the city.

During Day of Remembrance, the names of children who have died are read aloud so their memories can live on. Those who would like to take part and have a name of a child read can register on line at childrensparktyler.org or by calling 903-939-1579.

Registration at the park on Saturday will begin at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m.
