This year’s message at the Rose Festival Prayer Service emphasized the importance of gratitude for God’s creation and the importance of the Fruits of the Spirit.

“One of the things I appreciate about Tyler is the beauty — the roses, the people,” said Dr. John Robbins, senior pastor of Marvin United Methodist Church in Tyler. “We should have the proper perspective of giving honor and praise to the One who created all this, and certainly it is almighty God.”

Robbins went on to talk about each of the Fruits of the Spirit found in the book of Galatians — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control — and how each was important to remember during the time of the Rose Festival.

“Be joyful over the next several days,” he urged the participants. “This should be a lot of fun.”

It was a message the duchess and queen of the Rose Festival took to heart.

“The message was a great reminder of why we have the Rose Festival, to celebrate Tyler and the beauty of Tyler’s roses that God created,” said Duchess of the Rose Festival Joy Lynn Ramey.

The application of the Fruits of the Spirit was something Rose Queen Haley McGrede Anderson was glad to hear.

“I really thought it was something I, and all of us, needed to hear,” she said. “It really inspired me, because I get nervous, but it was nice to be reminded that it’s all in God’s hands.”
