TJC Apache Belles get their own specialty license plates
The Apache Belles are taking their act on the road, literally.
Although they might not be dancing, the familiar image of a spirited Tyler Junior College precision dancer will be emblazoned on specialty Texas license plates for all to see.
Today, My Plates.com, the state's only vendor for specialty plates, will release the Apache Belles design for the first time.
The license plate, which starts at $55 for a one-year term, features a vintage Apache Belle image on the left side.
The Belle is dressed in a uniform worn by the precision dance team from the mid-1950s to 1985, Apache Belles director Jasilyn Schaefer said.
It is the same yellow, white and black uniform unveiled by the Belles Saturday for homecoming and the organization's 65th anniversary year.
At the top of the license plate, Texas is printed in yellow letters.
At the bottom, Tyler Junior College is printed in black letters with Apache Belles in yellow letters underneath.
“We wanted something that no matter where people lived within the state of Texas that they could advertise and show their pride not only for Tyler Junior College, but the Apache Belles,” Mrs. Schaefer said.
The license plate puts Tyler on the map when it comes to specialty plates.
MyPlates.com public relations manager Kim Miller Drummond said this is the company's only license plate with a Tyler connection.

The Apache Belles will receive 10 percent of the license plate sales.
Mrs. Schaefer said the money will go toward the Belle Heritage Endowment to help with Apache Belle scholarships.
That is the same way the Kilgore College Rangerettes use their license plate funds.
Mazie Jamison, a former Kilgore College Rangerette and former Rangerettes Forever president, said the organization decided to have the plates to raise more money its scholarship fund.
To date, MyPlates.com has sold 251 Rangerette plates since they launched in February 2011.
Mrs. Schaefer said the Apache Belles want to beat My Plate's first-day sales record, held by the University of Mississippi.
That school sold 180 plates the first day its design was released.
“We hope that people will get behind it and show their Tyler pride by purchasing a license plate,” Mrs. Schaefer said.
The other is the Kilgore College Rangerettes. All of the other My Plates college plates represent schools at large, Ms. Drummond said.
Other specialty plates are available through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
