Tyler Junior College’s Texas Professor of the Year and Fulbright scholar Dr. Manoucher Khosrowshahi is taking reservations for “Turkey: Biblical and Archeological Tour of Asia Minor,” his annual 10-day travel study tour, planned for March 8 to 17, 2013.
Many of the places referred to in the Bible are located in modern day Turkey. These include Tarsus, Ephesus, Antioch, Harran, and Noah’s landing on Mount Ararat in the east to the Aegean coast in the west, Khosrowshahi wrote in the news release.
The Aegean coast is believed to be where the Virgin Mary spent her final mortal years and where the seven churches referred to in the book of Revelation are located.
Bridging Europe and Asia, Turkey has a long and deep historical legacy including such great civilizations as the Hittites, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines and the Ottoman Turks.
Vast archeological parks — some of the most impressive in the world — open windows to ancient worlds in Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis, Aphrodisias and Troy.
Turkey is a favorite destination for Christians who want to explore the history of Christianity including such events as the missionary journeys of Paul and other apostles, the great church councils of the fourth through sixth centuries, and the Byzantine-era communities including the exotic region of Cappadocia.
Because of its location and being the crossroads of civilizations, Turkish cuisine is one of the best in the Mediterranean diet, Khosrowshahi wrote. About 18 million people visited Turkey last year.
The 10-day tour costs $1,548 for the land portion plus the cost of international and domestic airfares. That fee pays for a double-occupancy room; ground transportation; accommodations in four-star hotels; entrance fees; two meals per day; professional, English speaking tour guides; and all taxes, tips and fees.
A $548 deposit is required before Dec. 3. Full payment is due by Jan. 4.
Enrollment for the tour is on a first-come, first-served basis because of space limitations.
The tour is open to the public. However, TJC students may enroll in a special government course to receive three credit hours.
There also is a $5,000 financial aid scholarship available to the TJC students.
