UPDATE: Gilmer police seeking female driver in hit-and-run

GILMER -- An elderly woman who was crossing a street in a motorized chair suffered minor injuries in a hit-and-run incident just off the north side of the downtown square this morning, police said.

Officers are seeking the driver, identified by witnesses as a white female, and her white Ford pickup this afternoon, said police Investigator Roxanne Warren.

The victim, who was white and whose name was not immediately available, was crossing Titus Street at the intersection with Buffalo Street when she was struck by a northbound pickup with rails, said Police Chief James Grunden. She complained of pain in her hip, and was taken by ambulance to East Texas Medical Center-Gilmer, he said.

Mrs. Warren said witnesses stated the female driver may have been on her cellular phone. She did not stop, the investigator said.

Grunden said his department advised him that at least three eyewitnesses saw the incident, and that one said it appeared the pickup had a short wheel base. Mrs. Warren said the pickup also had a fiberglass camper shell on its bed.

The elderly woman was in the middle of the street, believed to be westbound, and had the right-of-way when the pickup struck her, Mrs. Warren said. The truck was eastbound on Buffalo in front of the county courthouse, making a left turn onto Titus, when the incident occurred, the investigator said.

Police were called to the scene at 10:26 a.m., Grunden said.

Janice Hargrove, a secretary at the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce office on Buffalo Street near the crash scene, said she heard a noise and saw a truck "speeding off."

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Upshur County Crimestoppers at 843-3131, or go to the Upshur County website and click on the Crime Stoppers link, Mrs. Warren said. Tips can be made anonymously by phone or Internet, and she said the link is a "very secure way to make a tip."
