The program expansion is part of the food bank’s five-year plan to reach hungry children in TISD, according to the news release.
The program provides backpacks filled with nutritious and ready-to-eat food for children to eat over the weekend, according to the food bank’s website.
Children return empty backpacks at the start of the week and receive the filled backpacks for the next weekend.
The total projected cost of the five-year expansion is about $1 million, according to the news release.
Mentoring Minds, a Tyler-based business, has made an initial gift of $150,000 to this program and is announcing an additional $150,000 pledge to help the East Texas Food Bank reach its goal.
Any donations made by the community for TISD’s BackPack Program will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Mentoring Minds up to $150,000.
