UPDATE: Small fire at former Goodyear plant will not delay construction
A small fire at the former Goodyear tire plant on Thursday will not delay construction there, officials with the company said.

Jim Seaton, Smith County fire marshal, said the fire broke out around 3 p.m. when sparks from a welder ignited combustibles on the east side of the building. He said the crews were part of the demolition crews preparing the space for its new tenant.

The building received slight damage, but no one was injured, he said.

Dixie and Flint-Gresham volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

Mark Whatley works with Commercial Properties LLC, the firm that helped facilitate Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. to purchase 600,000 square feet of space in September.

Whatley said he contacted the property's owners, and the blaze will not hamper construction efforts.

“According to the person in charge it was minor,” Whatley said. “It didn't amount to anything, (and) it was a non-event as far as they were concerned.”

The company is slated to begin production of Miracle-Gro products in November and create between 20 and 30 full-time jobs.
