Cherokee County authorities are investigating details surrounding a 3-year-old boy who sustained burns to his chest area.

Detective Jonathan Hu-ghes, with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, said the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the toddler's residence on County Road 4126. He said one parent was home at the time.

The child, who is now under the care of Child Protective Services, was taken to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville and then transferred to another hospital.

He still was hospitalized Wednesday, and authorities are waiting until he gets better to talk with him, Hughes said.

"I was told basically (on Tuesday) that doctors were waiting to see the extent of his injuries, and the extent over the next day or two would tell the doctors what procedures would need to be done after that," he said.

Authorities are still investigating how the child was burned, and no arrest warrants have been issued.

"The main thing is we still have a few more interviews to do," Hughes said. "I'd like to talk to the child a little bit once he heals up some, and we'll see what comes up from that."
