80-year-old woman struck by car
KYTX CBS19 Reports

An 80-year-old Jacksonville woman remained in critical condition Monday after being struck by a car during an anti-abortion rally Sunday.

Detective James Oden, with the Jacksonville Police Department, said Margie Benge was participating in the rally with members of Our Lady Sorrows Catholic Church around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in front of the Jacksonville Public Library on Jackson Street.

According to police reports, a sedan driven by 19-year-old Matthew McCauley of Bullard struck Ms. Benge while she was sitting in a chair holding a sign, Oden said.

The car then dragged her for about 25 feet, hit a boat attached to a trailer, then came to a stop.

Ms. Benge was taken to Mother Frances — Jacksonville before she was air lifted to Mother Frances in Tyler. She is currently in ICU and listed in critical condition.

Oden said the 19-year-old told officers he fell asleep at the wheel when his car crept up on the sidewalk. He voluntarily submitted to a blood test. He was uninjured.

At this time no charges have been filed.

“It depends on the outcome of the blood test if charges will be filed,” Oden said.
