Tyler firefighters want you to 'Turn Tyler Pink'
Staff Reports

Tyler firefighters are asking the city to wear pink on Tuesday to show their support for cancer research and care.

The third annual Turn Tyler Pink event, set from 5 to 8 p.m. on T.B. Butler Fountain Plaza, is designed to raise awareness about women's cancer.

Event participants can catch a live performance by the group Breaking Southwest, featuring rocking country music artists playing tunes with a modern flair.

Pink shirts can be purchased for $15 each at Tyler's Gallery Main Street, 110 W. Erwin St. and Holiday Inn South Broadway, 5701 S. Broadway Ave.

Also Tuesday, firefighters also plan to give away a commemorative quilt, made by Nimble Thimbles from past Tyler Fire Fighters CARE shirts. The project was organized by Sue Spivey, mother of firefighter Cordell Parker.

Tickets are $5 each or five for $20 and may be purchased from Tyler firefighters, Turn Tyler Pink Ladies Auxiliary, Gallery Main Street and Citizens State Bank, 3915 SSW Loop 323.

The quilt may be viewed at Tyler Fire Station No. 5.

Event proceeds benefit local cancer organizations.

Tyler firefighters began selling pink shirts in 2008 when a department member's wife was diagnosed with cancer.

To aid the family, the department raised $12,000 by selling pink shirts, and by 2009, the effort expanded to include the event on the downtown square that attracted more than 500 supporters.

Last year, the Tyler Firefighters CARE Fund donated more than $17,000 last year to organizations that support the fight against cancer.
