It's beginning to look a lot like fall outside. And I'd better enjoy it while I can. Once November starts, I'll be tucked inside, tapping at my keyboard.

Why? November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo.

I'll be writing a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. And this will be my fourth year in a row — I met the goal in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

I won't be alone — NaNoWriMo organizers expect more than 250,000 people around the world to take on “a literary challenge of epic proportions.”

“NaNoWriMo is the writing world's version of a marathon,” said Grant Faulkner, executive director of National Novel Writing Month, in news release.

This is the time to write that book you've always said you had inside. What should you write? Whatever you want.

It's only 1,667 words a day.

WHY DO IT?
It's the No. 1 question I hear when I talk about why I think I can read 30 books before my 30th birthday: Why would you put that much pressure on yourself? And it's the same one when I talk about NaNoWriMo.

My answer: If I don't set a crazy goal, I won't achieve anything.

“This novel-in-a-month challenge is such a fantastic way to jump-start your story,” Lindsey Grant, NaNoWriMo's program director, said in a news release.

This year, I'll attempt a faux memoir of a former first lady with a big secret.

HAVE QUESTIONS?
If you have questions or want to know more, come the East Texas Writers Guild's monthly meeting Monday. It's at 6:45 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce. Mike Lantz, municipal liaison for Tyler, will talk about how to do write your novel and everything you'll need to be ready for Nov. 1.
