City of Tyler to be named ‘Community of the Year’
Staff Reports
Tyler’s efforts to plan ahead seem to be turning heads.
City leaders expect Friday to receive the Community of the Year award from the American Association of Planners – Texas Chapter during the group’s annual conference in Fort Worth.
The awards program recognizes individuals, organizations and communities for outstanding contributions to planning for Texas’ growth.
Tyler is being recognized for its Industry Growth Initiative plan, launched in 2010 as a cooperative effort between city leaders and several community boards, officials said.
“I don’t know of another time in Tyler’s history that so many of its elected boards held a joint meeting to adopt a single measure,” Mayor Barbara Bass said in a prepared statement. “This level of support demonstrated the need for the entire community to speak with one voice and work cooperatively for the sake of Tyler’s economic future.”
The idea to create the Industry Growth Initiative was hatched in 2009 during talks between the mayor and state Sen. Kevin Eltife, R-Tyler, who sought assistance from local elected and appointed leaders.
