Freshman player recovering after emergency brain surgery
NEW CHAPEL HILL — A Chapel Hill freshman continued to recover from brain surgery Tuesday following emergency surgery after he collapsed on the football field during practice a day before.
Jeff Dozier, Chapel Hill ISD chief facilities and operations director, said the student was taken by EMS to East Texas Medical Center Monday after he was not responsive to coaches and trainers on the field.
Bulldog coach Thomas Sitton said Dorian Timmons was still in ICU late Tuesday. He added, “Everyone is in a wait and see” position.
Dozier said the student was engaged in active football practice when he collapsed, however, he said coaches and staff said the student did not suffer any type of serious hit.
“I was told it was the basic blocking and hitting kind of stuff that goes on every practice and not some horrific hit that would even cause a concussion,” he said.
Dozier said school personnel worked with the student, but quickly called an ambulance for additional help when he began having seizures and remained unresponsive.

“Thankfully we have trainers on the field and emergency responders stationed close by that can get here quickly in the event of an emergency,” he said.
Late Monday, physicians performed emergency surgery to remove the clot.
Dozier said as of Tuesday afternoon, the student was on a ventilator and was in an almost drug-induced coma.
Dozier said family members are telling school officials that doctors are keeping the student sedated so his body does not have to struggle so he can begin healing from the surgery.
“We are staying in contact with the family and we have people there at the hospital with them. We are also giving our students, especially his teammates, updates as we get them,” he said.
