Chapel Hill player in ICU after suffering blood clot on brain during practice

NEW CHAPEL HILL — Students, faculty and staff are praying for a ninth grade student who suffered a blood clot on the brain on the practice field Monday during football practice.
Jeff Dozier, Chapel Hill Independent School District chief facilities and operations director, told the Tyler Morning Telegraph this morning that the student was transported by EMS to East Texas Medical Center Monday.
Dozier said the student, who was not named, was engaged in active football practice when he collapsed. However, he said coaches and staff told him the student did not suffer any type of serious hit.
“I was told it was the basic blocking and hitting kind of stuff that goes on every practice and not some horrific hit that would even cause a concussion,” he said.
Dozier said physicians performed emergency surgery Monday night to relieve pressure caused by the clot. He added the student remains in ICU this morning.
“We are staying in contact with the family and we have people there at the hospital with them. We are also giving our students, especially his teammates, updates as we get them,” he said.
