Alcohol election, September 26
Every time I read an article about the upcoming wet-dry election in parts of Smith County and Tyler, I think of two articles from the same issue of the Tyler Morning Telegraph a few years ago, both concerning the U.S. Navy. Being a Navy veteran, I was especially interested.
The first article stated that the Navy was worried about the increasing alcoholism among the enlisted men; the second stated that Admiral E.R. Zumwalt, head of the Navy at the time, had authorized the placement of beer machines in the barracks.
So, concerned about alcoholism, just make booze more available. Ironic. It seems self-defeating to me.
