Nelson Clyde: Is It Just Me?

State Fair like a gateway to Texas' Big Sky country

Is it just me or has the angle of the sun changed? It does this every year but even before the heat broke it felt like State Fair weather. I could almost smell a Fletcher's corny dog and stale beer at the feet of Big Tex. Even the echoing brogue of Keith Jackson calling the annual Texas/OU outfit competition seems to haunt at the moment.

Nothing against the East Texas Fair but the sky seems larger at the State Fair. Maybe the State Fair is the gateway to Big Sky country in West Texas. It's hard to be sure but no matter what you call it the weather has had a good run here of late.

It seems they fry something different at the state fair every year and after watching the movie Bernie it has made me wonder if they will resort to frying up some mud cats (a type of catfish some catfish connoisseurs look down on), bet they haven't tried that yet. Bet I won't either.

The best thing that can happen after attending any fair large, local or otherwise is a good hot shower. We used to really get jazzed over the fries at the Walter Fair booth at the East Texas Fair. Billie Heard was such a sweetheart that getting fries from her made the world seem whole for

at least 30 minutes until I was ready for some more. The cool night air means it is time for my copper fire pit to be regularly lit in the backyard. This is a ritual of mine which is intended to lure my family members into the great outdoors. The only one I can be certain will dutifully follow me there any more is the dog. Yes, man's best friend may have become mine in spite of my attempts to resist.

She will curl up at my feet and startle if I startle. Jump up immediately if I do. If she were only big enough to bring some more firewood.

Jamie informed me this week he thought he might like to live only to the ripe old age of 75 and wondered what I thought about that. “Sounds pretty young to me these days, but I know you've had your eye on some of my stuff, so I think I can see your point,” I said.

City Manager Mark McDaniel loves a challenge. His latest is to challenge me to put a team, including me, in the firefighters challenge to be held on Oct. 13.

No hair removal is specified in the contest which may be because each team has one woman and they don't put up with such nonsense and foolishness.

Speaking of foolishness, if you have not caught the trending video on our website starring Brandon Davidson and Seames O'Grady it could be the most rewarding five minutes of each day of this week. They post their observations on Web and lifestyle trends each day around noon with a dose of laughter and even some props and real-life drama. Check it out.
