God-given rights, September 19
I commend the Tyler Paper for the excellent editorial and article printed on Monday commemorating Constitution Day. Also, Monday was quarterly income tax payment day. As I sent in my payment, although I disagree with the current administration's fiscal policies, I always have an emotional surge of thankfulness as I deposit my check in the mailbox, thankful that I live in America and enjoy the freedoms that our Constitution was designed to protect.
Also, State Bar of Texas President Buck Files' commentary on the Constitution was right on target. I agree that education systems should give more emphasis to the study of our nation's founding documents. I would like to respectfully add what I believe is the most significant aspect of the Constitution and founding documents.
The Declaration of Independence recognizes that mankind is “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, That to secure these Rights, governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the Consent of the Governed.
The conclusion, simply stated, is that the Constitution doesn't just let us enjoy those rights, but that we, the people, already have these God-given rights, and they are not derived from government.
