Patriotic art draws attention to Wounded Warriors

When Monique Dorsey decided to do a painting benefiting the Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation, she knew she wanted it to be both powerful and patriotic.

She painted the head of an American Bald Eagle with piercing eyes and a strong beak in front of the American flag — two iconic images of the strength and freedom of the United States.

Ms. Dor-sey’s artwork is one of five paintings by members of the Tyler-based Palette of Roses Art League drawing attention to Texas Wounded Warrior, a nonprofit organization that pays tribute to and raises money to help members of the military who have ongoing disabilities from injuries suffered during combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“All the images (in the exhibit) are very patriotic in nature,” said Ms. Dorsey. Some who view the paintings are moved to tears, she added.

For Palette of Roses members, making the artwork was a way of contributing to a cause they believe in.

“We all wanted to do something to help this organization,” said Ms. Dorsey. “Some of our members are wives of veterans.”

All the paintings are up for bid. The money raised will go to Wounded Warrior. One painting already has a bid of $500.

The paintings are on view and bids can be placed through midday Tuesday at Tyler Ford, 2626 WSW Loop 323; from Tuesday afternoon to Sept. 24 at KE Cellars, 4574 S. Broadway Ave. and then through Sept. 28 at KETK, 4300 Richmond Road at Loop 323.

On Sept. 29 the exhibit will be at Rose City Flying Clays, 8474 Smith County Road 485, which is hosting a shooting benefit for Wounded Warrior from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bidding will conclude on Sept. 29 at KE Bushman’s Celebration Center near Bullard during the Cost of Freedom Celebration featuring a concert at 7 p.m. by country music star Randy Travis.

Information about Wounded Warrior Foundation and the upcoming celebration is available at txwoundedwarrior.com.
