ETSO hosts barbecue, movies to ring in upcoming season
The East Texas Symphony Orchestra is hosting two special events in the lead up to their 2012-13 season opener with their new conductor/music director, Richard Lee.

The first will be Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Liberty Hall with a special screening of “Beethoven Lives Upstairs.” The film tells the story of young Christopher, whose life is turned upside down when his family takes in an eccentric boarder, Ludwig van Beethoven.

Lee will be at this event to introduce the film as well as to meet with families afterward. Admission is $3 per person.

The second event is the season kick-off party, “Beethoven, Boots and Blue Jeans.” At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Ricks’ on the Square, attendees can partake of barbecue and beer, as well as live entertainment by The Magills, as well as the opportunity to meet and greet Lee.

Lee succeeds Maestro Per Brevig, who resigned in 2011 after nine years of conducting ETSO. Lee’s succession was formally announced in June. He is a native Canadian who resides in Winnipeg.

Immediately following the event at Rick’s will be a special screening of the film “Immortal Beloved” at Liberty Hall at 7:30 p.m. Starring Gary Oldman and Isabella Rossellinni, “Immortal Beloved” tells the story of the life and death of Ludwig van Beethoven. In addition to the masterful music Beethoven penned, he also famously wrote a love letter to an unnamed woman. The identity of this “immortal beloved” is the central mystery of the film, the unraveling of which is no easy task given how many lovers Beethoven took.

Admission to the Tuesday event is $30 (with access to both the screening and Rick’s) with limited space available.

The following weekend, Lee will conduct the first concert of the season, “Beethoven Spectacular.” The concert will include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with soloist Winston Choi, as well as the performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3.
