Quarterly Art Walk gets Saturday slot

In addition to that upcoming “6x6@110” show, there’s more in store for Gallery Main Street, most notably some significant changes to the quarterly Art Walk event.

The most significant change will be the day it takes place. Thursday afternoon is when the event was held, relying on traffic from downtown businesses to help populate the storefronts and sidewalks around the square where various works of art (and the artists who created them) are on display. However, beginning Sept. 22, the event will take place on Saturday.

“Art Walk is evolving. It’s maturing,” said Gallery Main Street Curator Ashley Foxx. “It at first had to rely on Thursday traffic. But now it’s become a destination point to where we can move it to a Saturday.”

Ms. Foxx said the change is due to public requests for a more accessible day of the week, but also it will allow the event to be more accessible to a wider audience but also more of a showcase.

“We took this as an opportunity to do a lot of different things,” she said. “We’re going to have a lot more interactive events, a lot more art demos. We’re trying to get artists from other genres, not just visual arts, such as, dancers and musicians. We’ve got a blacksmith artist participating. We’re going to have people posing as living sculptures. It’s broadening.”

The intent, Ms. Foxx said, is to make Art Walk into something larger in scope and scale.

“It’s just going to be a very unique experience. We’re going to make the ambiance more than just, ‘Here’s the Art Walk, here’s a paper sign in the window,’ we’re making it a bigger event,” she said.

The downtown Art Walk will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
