John Edgar Mattson
A memorial service for John Edgar Mattson, 80, of Tyler will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Southern Oaks Baptist Church with Bro. Larry W. Craig officiating.

Mr. Mattson passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, under the care of The Hospice of East Texas.

He was born In Duluth, Minn., on May 7, 1932, to David and Beatrice Mattson. John E. Mattson graduated in 1960 from the University of Minnesota and then moved his family to Southern California. He worked for 30 years as a teacher, principal and administrator at the Rowland Unified School District.

Mr. Mattson was a member of Southern Oaks Baptist Church. Church was a very important part of his life, from attending services, to teaching Sunday school, and working with young children. John had a talent for singing and playing instruments and used his gifts to serve the LORD. John enjoyed spending his days working with people in need of food at PATH, building homes for Habitat for Humanity and delivering hot meals to shut-ins with Meals On Wheels.

Mr. Mattson was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Sally Mattson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wilma Rust Mattson; and his loving family including his sister, Hazel Schwartz; brothers, Lloyd Mattson and Arthur Mattson; all of Minnesota; his children, Gayle Mattson of California; Gary Mattson of Oregon and Greg Mattson of Oregon; stepchildren, Pam Day of Tyler and Roger Slone of Dallas; and by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

There will be no graveside service due to his generosity by donating his body to medical science.
